San Francisco 49ers Roster and Injury Update
The San Francisco 49ers are battling a wave of bad news on the injury front, and it’s hitting several key positions just as the preseason heats up.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that quarterback Mac Jones suffered a knee sprain and will miss this week. While the injury isn’t season-ending, it’s a setback for a QB room already looking to solidify depth and rhythm.
The backfield took a bigger hit as running back Patrick Taylor (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve. Shanahan confirmed that Taylor will require surgery, cutting short his 2025 season before it even began.
At wide receiver, there’s still no update on Jauan Jennings’ lingering calf issue, while the offensive line took a blow with Dominick Puni (knee sprain) now expected to miss a few weeks. Defensively, Mykel Williams continues to sit out with a hyperextended knee, and cornerback Upton Stout remains sidelined by a calf injury — though Shanahan stressed he’s not worried about Stout’s Week 1 status.

To help plug holes, the 49ers signed quarterback Nate Sudfeld, a familiar face who provides depth while Jones heals up. On the flip side, the team cut ties with running back Ameer Abdullah and wideout Equanimeous St. Brown.
San Francisco also hosted tryouts for offensive line help, bringing in Michael Dunn, Chasen Hines, and Carter O’Donnell. Given the rash of injuries, reinforcements in the trenches could be on the horizon.
The 49ers may be a powerhouse on paper, but these early setbacks are raising concerns about depth and durability before Week 1 even arrives.
