The Tampa Bay Buccaneers survived a Week 1 dogfight, edging out the Atlanta Falcons 23 to 20 to open the season with a key divisional win. It was not pretty, but in the end Baker Mayfield and rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka delivered when it mattered most.
Tampa Bay Finds Life at the Right Time
For most of the afternoon, the Buccaneers offense looked stuck in neutral. Drives sputtered, the run game struggled to find rhythm, and Mayfield was consistently forced off his spot by Atlanta’s relentless front.
Then, with the game on the line, Mayfield flipped the switch. Operating in a hurry up style, he orchestrated a 63 yard sprint in just five plays, capped by a pinpoint 25 yard touchdown strike to Egbuka. It was vintage Mayfield, fiery, fearless, and clutch.
Tampa Bay knows it cannot wait until the final two minutes every week to show urgency, but for this matchup it was just enough.

Falcons Defense Shines Until It Doesn’t
Raheem Morris’ defense looked like a different unit compared to last season. Atlanta pressured Mayfield on 40.5 percent of his dropbacks, missed just four tackles all game, and held Tampa to a 36.4 percent success rate offensively.
Through three quarters, the Bucs managed just 192 total yards. The Falcons were flying around, limiting explosive plays and forcing Mayfield to improvise outside the pocket. But when it mattered most, they cracked and allowed the game winning drive that spoiled an otherwise impressive defensive showing.
Egbuka’s Breakout Debut
When Tampa Bay drafted Emeka Egbuka with the 19th overall pick, many questioned why they would add yet another wideout to a room already featuring Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan. One game in, the Bucs look like geniuses.
With Godwin working back from injury and McMillan sidelined, Egbuka stepped into the spotlight and he did not disappoint. The rookie finished with four catches for 67 yards, including two touchdowns of 25 yards or more. His second score sealed the win and proved Tampa Bay can count on him in big moments.
If this is just the beginning, Egbuka might be the next great weapon in an already loaded passing attack.
By the Numbers
Nine Atlanta defenders recorded at least one pressure.
Divine Deablo, Ruke Orhorhoro, and James Pearce Jr. each logged four pressures apiece.
The Bucs have now won five straight Week 1 games.
Mayfield tossed three touchdowns, despite posting the fewest passing yards ever in a three touchdown performance in his NFL career.
The Bottom Line
The Buccaneers did not dominate, but they did not fold either. Mayfield once again proved he can thrive in chaos, and Egbuka’s debut gave Tampa Bay another weapon to fear.
For the Falcons, this one stings. They had the Bucs on the ropes all game, but when it came time to finish, they simply could not. That is a lesson Morris and his team will have to learn quickly if they want to compete in the NFC South.
