Saturday’s preseason gave Giants fans a reason to get excited about rookie Jaxson Dart.
The first-round QB completed 12 of 19 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown, leading New York on three straight scoring drives in the second quarter of their 34-25 win over the Bills.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll wasn’t surprised by Dart’s strong showing.
“Just about what I thought he would do. Efficient, effective, aggressive, confident in the pocket. Some stuff we can work on, but he’s doing good.”

Dart’s highlight came on a gutsy 29-yard touchdown strike to Lil’Jordan Humphrey. Despite Bills defensive tackle T.J. Sanders breathing down his neck and tagging him right after the throw, Dart stood tall and fired a perfect pass. The 22-year-old rookie quickly shook off the hit and celebrated his first NFL touchdown with the team.
He also added a team-high 24 rushing yards on three carries and showed an ability to avoid pressure, including a slick 19-yard scramble for a first down.
That said, the debut wasn’t flawless. Dart’s first drive against Buffalo’s starters ended with a near interception and a few missed throws to open receivers.
Russell Wilson got his first taste of Giants action, completing 6 of 7 passes for 28 yards in one series before penalties stalled the drive. Veteran Jameis Winston had a solid second-half showing with 7 of 11 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, while returning QB Tommy DeVito added 10 of 14 passing for 73 yards and a TD late in the game.
With Wilson locked in as the starter, Dart is making a strong push to become the primary backup.
There’s still work to be done over the next two preseason games, but Dart’s first outing was a big step toward winning the job — and a promising glimpse into the Giants’ future.
