Jets QB Justin Fields Avoids Major Injury, But Still Day-to-Day After Toe Scare

The New York Jets had a scare on Thursday when starting quarterback Justin Fields had to be carted off the field early in practice. But just a day later, there’s some cautious optimism coming out of camp.

Fields was back on the practice field Friday helmet on, toe taped, and walking around with no noticeable limp. While he didn’t take part in drills, his presence alone was a good sign after dislocating a toe on his right foot during Thursday’s session.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn kept things short and steady, saying the team is taking it "day-to-day."

“When he's ready to come back, we'll make sure he's out on the field,” Glenn said after practice.

In the meantime, it was Tyrod Taylor leading the first-team reps while Adrian Martinez and rookie Brady Cook also took snaps. But all eyes were on Fields, who stayed close to the offense and seemed locked in mentally despite the injury.

What Happened?

Fields was injured on just his fifth rep of team drills Thursday when a teammate stepped on his foot as he released an incomplete pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert. The QB dropped to the turf, then limped off with help before being carted to the facility. He eventually walked inside under his own power.

So yeah this could’ve been a lot worse.

What’s Next?

The Jets are going to be cautious here, as they should. Dislocated toes can be tricky for a quarterback who thrives on mobility like Fields. But with him already moving around and looking relatively comfortable, the team—and fans—can breathe a little easier.

Still, until he’s fully cleared, it’s the Tyrod Taylor show. And if you're wondering about the depth chart, yes rookie Brady Cook is getting early exposure, which may come in handy later this preseason.

Will Justin Fields be ready for Week 1? Or could this open the door for Tyrod or even Brady Cook to steal the spotlight? Drop your thoughts below—this is a live, interactive show, and we want to hear from YOU.
