Colts Make Big QB Decision: Daniel Jones Named Starter Over Anthony Richardson

The Indianapolis Colts are going with experience under center to kick off a pivotal 2025 season. Head coach Shane Steichen announced Tuesday that Daniel Jones will start over Anthony Richardson for the regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins on September 7.

NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero first reported the news, noting that Steichen informed both quarterbacks of his decision Tuesday morning.

"He's the starting quarterback for the season," Steichen told the Indianapolis Star. "I don't want to have a short leash on that."

The decision comes just days after Indianapolis’ second preseason game. In that matchup, Jones completed 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards while Richardson finished 6-of-11 for 73 yards.

Jones was signed by the Colts this offseason to compete with Richardson, the team’s 2023 No. 4 overall pick. Richardson struggled with both health and performance during his first two seasons, and this move gives the Colts a proven option as they aim to make a strong push in 2025.

With Jones under center, the Colts hope to start the season with stability and leadership at the most important position on the field.
