In a move that caught many off guard, the Las Vegas Raiders have officially released star defensive tackle Christian Wilkins following a disagreement over the handling of his foot injury. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Raiders are also attempting to void the remaining $35.25 million in guarantees on Wilkins' contract.
A grievance has already been filed on Wilkins’ behalf to challenge the team’s decision to void those guarantees.
The Raiders confirmed the news Thursday with a public statement:
"We have decided that it is in the best interests of the organization to move on from Christian Wilkins and he has been informed of his release from the team. This franchise has a Commitment to Excellence on and off the field. With no clear path or plan for future return to play from Christian, this transaction is necessary for the entire organization to move forward and prepare for the new season."
Wilkins, who missed most of the 2024 season after suffering a Jones fracture, had been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to start training camp. Despite consulting with multiple medical professionals, Wilkins declined the team-recommended surgery, creating a rift between the two sides.
This ends a once-promising relationship that began just a year ago when Las Vegas signed Wilkins to a four-year, $110 million deal—making him one of the highest-paid defensive tackles in the league at the time.

What Does This Mean for the Raiders?
Wilkins was the crown jewel of the Raiders’ 2024 free-agent class—a disruptive interior force who was expected to anchor the defensive line for years. His signing was seen as a transformative move, adding credibility and strength to the trenches.
Instead, Wilkins managed just 17 tackles and two sacks across five appearances before the injury derailed his season. New head coach Pete Carroll later described the recovery process as “challenging,” and by OTAs, Wilkins was still not cleared to participate fully.
His absence now leaves a significant void on the defensive front. Adam Butler remains a starting option, while the team will likely turn to free-agent addition Leki Fotu to fill Wilkins’ role. Fotu, who previously played for the Jets and Cardinals, brings experience but far less pass-rush upside—registering just 3.5 career sacks.
The door also opens wider for rookies Tonka Hemingway (4th round) and JJ Pegues (6th round) to earn meaningful snaps. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Raiders looked to bring in another veteran to stabilize the interior.
What’s Next for Christian Wilkins?
Wilkins’ future now hangs in the balance. Just one season removed from a standout campaign with the Dolphins where he posted nine sacks, the 2019 first-rounder finds himself trying to recover both physically and reputationally.
Despite never earning a Pro Bowl nod, Wilkins has been a steady force over six NFL seasons, totaling 372 tackles, 22.5 sacks, 56 QB hits, and four forced fumbles. His production and versatility make him an attractive target—if he can get healthy.
Teams in need of an interior disruptor, whether contenders or rebuilders, will surely do their due diligence. But the medical red flags and the nature of his split with Las Vegas could complicate his market.
Once fully recovered, Wilkins should have no shortage of suitors. But until then, his journey to find a new home remains on hold.
