Spencer Rattler Named Saints Starting Quarterback

The New Orleans Saints have made their decision at quarterback, and it’s official: Spencer Rattler will lead the team into the 2025 season.

Head coach Kellen Moore announced Tuesday that the 2024 fifth-round pick has earned the QB1 job over Tyler Shough. While the preseason stat lines between the two weren’t worlds apart, Rattler’s poise, decision-making, and consistency in training camp gave him the edge.

“Spencer Rattler’s our starting quarterback. Really, really excited for him. He’s done an awesome job this offseason,” Moore told reporters. “He’s just been consistent. He’s made some really good decisions throughout this whole process and his ability to make plays with his arm and his feet have certainly showed up. Spencer’s earned this opportunity, and he’s going to do a tremendous job for us.”

Rattler, who appeared in six games as a rookie last season, will make his seventh career start on Sept. 7 when the Saints host the Arizona Cardinals. For Moore, this is no temporary move. He emphasized that New Orleans isn’t planning on rotating quarterbacks or reopening the battle later in the season.

“Spencer’s our starting quarterback. Tyler’s going to keep developing, but we’re not getting into this QB debate throughout the season,” Moore said.

For Rattler, the vote of confidence means everything.

“Obviously excited to be the guy going into Week 1,” Rattler said. “Want to lead this team, want to lead these guys. Just keep fighting, that’s one thing I can promise—putting my all on that field and I know everybody else will. Good to gain that confidence from your coach to make that decision.”

After a strong camp and preseason, Rattler now carries the weight of leading New Orleans into a new era under Moore. The Saints are betting on his growth, and if August was any indication, he’s ready for the challenge.
